What a fantastic weekend for Event Waste Management and for a even more fantastic charity event. The pretty muddy event was great on the Saturday and was good to see the kids also taking part. The event attracted around 3000 runners and was located in Leeds at a vert grand country house. Sunday followed with the 5k 10k and 1/2 marathon and was also a vert well turned out event.

The money raised what in the region of £240k which shows the massive support for a well organised event.Great thank you is to be given to all involved and all the people who take time out of their busy lives to help.

Event Waste Management

Clearance And Clean up Ltd had a 3 man team their on the Saturday managing the waste from the event and litter picking the pretty muddy course the weather wasn't great but all in all was a fun day.

Like the 1st day Sunday was a slightly larger event but followed the same principle. The team also conducted a clear up of the water stations located round the course. The day was well attended and the sun was shining on the Sunday so that always helps.

Fridge Collections In Sheffield

After passing through the airlocks, fridges are loaded into a two shaft shredder where the units are pre-shredded. The material then enters a hammer mill which reduces its size to circa. 50mm fragments and the PUR foam is separated from the other materials.

Foam and plastics are separated using a ZZ separator and the foam is then processed through a shredder, autoclaves in series, and press to produce briquettes, releasing the CFCs and other gases from the foam. The entire plant is operated under negative pressure with nitrogen used throughout the process to reduce oxygen content to prevent any fires or explosion. Gases released during the process are diverted to the solvent recovery unit (Activated Carbon) where they are captured.

The recovered material outputs from the process include: Ferrous metals, Non-ferrous metals, Plastics, Gas, Cables, Glass, Oil, Compressors and Foam briquettes.

The bulk of the waste from the Sheffield Half Marathon as to be expected was plastic water bottles and we estimate each runner consumed on average 4 bottles The waist weight is slightly inaccurate as some bottles still have water remaining in them so we estimate the true recycled weight to be around 2 tonnes this is taken to a local transfer station for recycling and processing.

 

Litter Picking & Road Sweeping Sheffield Half Marathon

The whole course had to be swept by a road sweeper prior to the event taking place to ensure it was safe for all taking part and to remove any trip hazards the whole course was then swept by the road sweeper and litter picked but the Clearance And Clean Up Ltd team on completion with some great help from the volunteers and the Run for All Staff.
