A few weeks ago, a story hit Sheffield that upset many of its residents. This wasn’t your regular kind of upsetting story because it was actually related to fly tipping after a house clearance in once of Sheffield’s most beautiful areas. Blacka Moor is a nature reserve and on a small road named Moss Road, on its outskirts, the bulk of a house clearance were discovered dumped. This happening was discovered by a walker, who was horrified and reported in thereafter to the local council. They highlighted the problems that dumping general rubbish and off loading post house clearance can cause. These reasons included the eyesore that it causes and the dangers rubbish can cause to humans, wildlife and livestock who live in the area. Plastic bags for example can cause suffocation, glass can cut, injury and kill, as can any sharp object, most household items are not able to be broken down naturally so ecologically are environmentally extremely unfriendly and financially, why should the council have to pay for someone else’s household items to be removed and disposed of? People may think that fly tipping will save them money because they won’t have to pay the waste disposal charge, but they obviously do not realise that personal identification can often be obtained from litter which has been dumped and the owner is then tracked down and fined. This certainly will not save them money!

Spring has sprung and it is the perfect time of year for everyone to be spring cleaning their house. For many people this is the time of year when they decide to tidy up, sort things out, out their house on the market and move on to pastures new. But this is when people often discover all sort of items which they had completely forgotten all about, lurking in their attic or basement. Do you know what’s hiding in yours?
Interestingly, during house clearances, it has been found that an estimated 40% of us own antiques or vintage items and 16% have unknowingly given these, often high value items away, either to friends, relatives or charity shops. Strangely, even when a lot of us know that we have these items, it is interesting to know that we don’t tend to bother listing them on our home insurance, as a nation, either. When asked during this survey, members of the public were unable to estimate the worth of the contents of the house due to the fact that they do not do a regular content checks, cover or valuations. This can often be because we do not realise that some things are of particular value. When we say antiques, yes we are referring to large items such as a Victorian sideboard, but there are much smaller, younger items which will surprise you with their value and these are examples of items which are often not taken in to consideration for valuation. A good example of this is a Meccano, clockwork race car from somewhere around 1915 – this may have been small in size, but when sold, gained almost £500.
Perhaps, therefore it is time this Spring, to see what is hiding out in your attic or cellar. It could be something you have been missing, a way a making yourself a little extra cash or decluttering your home before a house move. Clearance and Cleanup can assist you with decluttering your home, moving house or furniture removal.

He was an electrical installations manager working for Sheffield City Council until he went to fight. But on 26th September 1915, Sgt Francis Stubbs was killed in action in France, having been serving with the Royal Engineers. He was 35 years old at the time and sadly, had a daughter on the way, which he never had the fortune of meeting, but she was given a suitcase full of his possessions which she kept for the entirety of her life. When she died however, her house was subjected to a house clearance, where the suitcase filled with WWI items came in to the possession of David Empson, a historian and collector. This suitcase was very much seen as a ‘one off’ due to the fact that the collection of contents inside it told an entire story of one life. Stories gripping, when it was learnt that a comrade of Sgt Stubbs removed all of the items out of his pockets when he lay dying, having been caught in an explosion. Thanks to the house clearance the smashed pocket watch, blood stained identity tag and pipe all live on to tell their incredible story, despite not being in the hands of Sgt Stubbs’ relatives any longer.
It’s incredible what can be found in a house clearance, sometimes just things you have forgotten about lurking in your own home. Whether you are moving house or just need a good clear out, we can help you, here at Clearance and Cleanup. This month, the heirs to the Guinness brand, auctioned off the contents of their Georgian property, Furness House, which was built in 1740. The auction was held at Killashee House Hotel due to the house currently being for sale. Patrick and Louise Guinness (Patrick being thedirect descendent) are the seventh generation, post Arthur Guinness, when they bought Furness House in 1994. 21 years later, the couples have decided to downsize their house and get rid of many of its valuable contentsby having a house clearance sale, since the last of their four children left home. Many of the items being sold are Guinness and Co. memorabilia. Items like a rare pair of metal-bound stout barrels which were inscribed with the company name made €2,300 and a set of coloured caricature prints entitled The Gentle Art of Making Guinness sold for €1,600. Though the biggest surprise of the day during the house clearance auction was the success of an Edwardian carved and hand painted rocking horse. It was estimated to fetch between €800 and €1,200 but sold for a whopping €6,600!

According to Auto World News, the 6th September was ‘National Clean Out your Garage Day’ in America. A recent survey has concluded that 9 out of 10 Americans use their garage as a workshop, tool shed or recreational area, instead of actually storing their car. The day is apparently dedicated to educating the general public about the importance of organisation and safety in a garage, encouraging people to de-clutter and re-organise to make the space safer and more functional. As rubbish removal Sheffield experts, we think it’s a great idea, and certainly one that us Brits should consider adopting.
Garages are a handy advantage of having a modern home. But ask yourself this – when was the last time you could actually fit your car in the garage?! If you can’t remember, or know it’s been a while, then you are one of the thousands of people throughout the UK who have sacrificed their garage space to junk. You name it, any item that is no longer used in the house, or that you intend to give to charity or car boot ends up there. And the chances are it never gets any further!
In many homes, garages tend to be a graveyard of clutter, housing random items such as outdoor gear, broken toys, unfinished DIY projects and more. Because lots of people spend very little time in their garage, it can easily be overlooked when it comes to general cleaning, tidying and housekeeping. As they say - out of sight, out of mind.
As experts in house clearance services and rubbish removal Sheffield, Clearance and Clean Up come across plenty of customers who have given up their garages to junk. It really is a common problem, but there is a solution! Our team will happily come to your home and remove all the unwanted items from your garage in one go, without you having to lift a finger. You’ll be amazed at the amount of space we can create, leaving you with plenty of room to use your garage for what it is supposed to be used for – housing your car! Or maybe you’d just like the space back to be used as a workshop or tool shed, or even converted into an extra room?
The specialist rubbish removal team at Clearance and Clean Up are fully equipped to reclaim useful space in your home so you can put it to better use. Once we’ve collected your rubbish in our rubbish removal trucks we’ll make sure it’s disposed of responsibly and sustainably through our extensive contacts including local charities and material recycling stations. When the job is complete, you will be issued with a waste transfer note, which is required by law, giving you the peace of mind that your rubbish and junk is being treated and dealt with in the correct manner.
As experienced providers of a variety of clearance services such as office clearance, rubbish removal and house clearance Sheffield, Clearance and Clean Up have seen many a house full to the brim with a selection of household objects, furniture and rubbish. It’s not uncommon for us to struggle our way into a property because of all the items crammed inside, but one thing can be assured, we always manage to get the property clean and clear by the time we’ve finished the job!
The media has been awash with cases of extreme hoarding over the last few years. As the problem enters widespread knowledge and more and more people become aware of those living with the condition commonly known as “hoarding disorder”, several programmes have popped up on our TV screens. From the Channel 5 documentary ‘Can’t Stop Won’t Stop’ focussed around 3 hoarder cases, to the Channel 4 series ‘The Hoarder Next Door’, the public are slowly becoming aware of the amount of people in the UK affected by this debilitating disorder.
There are, of course, many problems with the act of hoarding in a home, and the behaviour has been linked to health risks, impaired functioning, and alienation of family members. It is thought that as many as between 2-5% of the adult population suffer from hoarding disorder, so it’s far more common than you may think.
With a range of therapeutic interventions available to help those with hoarding disorder, there is no reason why people suffering from the condition cannot take steps to regain control of their mental health and de-clutter their homes so that they are safe places to live again.
Cognitive-behavioural therapy is a common course of treatment for compulsive hoarding, and this therapeutic intervention can be incredibly effective. By working closely with a patient, the therapist involved will help the sufferer to understand why they are compelled to hoard, and slowly begin to organise their possessions so that they are able to decide what they want to keep and what they are willing to let go of.
Removing clutter from the home can produce promising results, but needs to be done carefully with the help of a therapist. However, once the items have been identified as possessions the sufferer is able to let go of comfortably, the help of house clearance Sheffield services can be utilised.
Here at Clearance and Clean Up, we are very experienced in the process of removing unwanted items from properties that have been, or still are occupied by those who have suffered with hoarding related disorders. After effective therapy, our staff can de-clutter and clean a house, making a huge difference to the life of the occupant of the house or the person in charge of the property.
If you need help de-cluttering and cleaning with a house clearance Sheffield, Clearance and Clean Up can help. If you would like to receive a quote for house clearance in Sheffield, please call us on 0114 403 1021 or email [email protected]
There are several reasons why you may be looking for a Sheffield house clearance service. It may be that you have recently moved and need your unwanted items taking away, or perhaps you just want to de-clutter. You may have lost a friend or a family member and need help clearing their home, or perhaps you are a landlord who needs to get a property into top shape for your next tenant.
Whatever the reason for the house clearance, it is important to ensure that whoever carries out the clearance does so in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible. There are many benefits to recycling, many of which are outlined below.
According to the Environmental Association, “Landfill is still the principal means of managing most of the waste, although land filling of municipal waste has decreased (in England) from 79% in 2000/01 to an estimated 55% at the end of 2007.” Targets set by the Landfill Directive aim to reduce the amount of waste going into land fill by implementing a Landfill Tax in 1996, but the amount of waste going into landfill remains a problem, with approximately 44% of industrial and commercial waste ending up here.
Sending items to landfill may have been the easy option for many in the past as it was cheap and there was plenty of space available in old quarries. But as this space began to run out, and the full effect of the biodegradable waste on the atmosphere was discovered, reusing and recycling waste became a top priority.
Here at Clearance and Clean Up, we aim to reuse as many items as possible from our house clearance Sheffield services. We can do this because we have established good relationships with many charity shops all over the South Yorkshire, including Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley. If you want to rest assured that your house clearance items are being reused by people that need them, or even being recycled for their raw materials and made into new items, then we’re the house clearance Sheffield company for you.
If you are looking for an ethical house clearance Sheffield company who aims to reuse and recycle as much as possible from their house clearances, Clearance and Clean Up can help. For house clearance Sheffield, please call us on 0114 403 1021 or email [email protected]
The loss of a friend or loved one is undoubtedly one of the hardest things in life to have to cope with. Grieving is an incredibly difficult process and it often takes a long time to fully come to terms with the death of a friend or relative. There are also a lot of things to sort out after someone dies, for example, ensuring their finances are in order, organising the funeral, and sorting out arrangements for house clearance in Sheffield.
Making arrangements for house clearance after bereavement can seem like a huge chore, but as specialists in house clearance in Sheffield, Clearance and Clean Up can help to make it easier on you and your family.
If you live a distance away from the property that needs to be cleared, our staff can pick up the keys from neighbours, the probate administrator, or the estate agent that is taking care of the estate, meaning that the customer does not actually need to be present at the time of the house clearance. This can be very convenient should you not live in the local area, or simply can’t face the prospect of sorting through your loved ones possessions and carrying out the clearance yourself.
Alternatively, if you would prefer to be at the property when we carry out the house clearance, that is absolutely fine too. As specialists in Sheffield house clearances, we understand that you may find the process upsetting. Our team of staff has cleared hundreds of houses following bereavement throughout the city and surrounding area, and are not only polite and professional, but compassionate and friendly too.
It may be the case that the property we clear after the death of the resident is extremely cluttered. This may be due to hoarding or simply because they haven’t been able to keep the house clean and tidy due to illness or a length of time in hospital. That is totally fine, we are very experienced in clearing houses that may slightly more challenging and we are more than happy to carry out these more difficult jobs.
If you are in the unfortunate circumstance that you have lost a relative or loved one to illness or old age, and need help with a house clearance Sheffield, Clearance and Clean Up can help.
