House clearance Sheffield advice by Tom Pickering the owner of South Yorkshire largest on demand rubbish removal and property clearance company and I'm going to give you my top 10 tips to make your clearance go as smoothly as possible and save you both time and money on the process.

  1. Take anything you are keeping out of the property or at very least put in 1 room in the corner and label do not remove this will save the clearance company time trying to decide what is staying and what is going and avoids any confusion.
  2. This isn't a must but will save time and ultimatly save you money empty and bag up the kitchen cupboards or at the very least take the items out and put on the kitchen side this will save the clearance company time.
  3. Empty and bag up clothes again not a must but will save time and you money also gives you a chance to make sure you haven't missed anything of value.
  4. Get a charity round this good for a few reasons you are donating items and a bonus is the more they take for free the less the house clearance company
will charge as most companies price based on volume and time on site but don't be disopointed when they take very little charities are inundated with stock and can be picky.
  5. When phoning to book your clearance have as much detail as possible to include , List of the large items cooker beds etc, Any access issues narrow lane etc , Details about basements or garages the better the detail the more accurate the price will be.
  6. Knowing whats required by this I mean house clearances can be done for many reason and the properties can be of any type weather its privately owned housing association council etc they all have different standards they want them back in so for instance if its privately owned is it going up for sale does it need cleaning and making presentable. If its a council house are the carpets to come up do the lights need changing back to standard fitments their is many questions to ask just cover your self by asking them what standard do you want the property to be handed over in.
  7. Time slots for booking your clearance this will all depend on the size of your clearance and the company will advise but I would recommend the first slot in the morning as this is normally more reliable as if they have jobs before you they could run over making them late to yours.
  8. Let the clearance company do their job once they are on site have a chat with them and leave them to it specially if its a full clearance and you have removed your items of value they will work faster ultimately saving you money if their was any problems they would have your number.
  9. On completion of the clearance walk round the property with a member of the clearance team making sure nothing has being missed sometime there is sneaky little cupboards etc that can be missed or hidden away so always check
  10. PAPERWORK PAPERWORK PAPERWORK this is so important make sure you are issued with the correct paperwork this should include a waste transfer note with the property address on the company name their address the Waste license number that can be checked online at the environment agency website. Make sure you are also issued with a receipt and if you are being charged VAT make sure there is a VAT number on the invoice their is no excuse these days for people not issuing paperwork wether it be straight after the job or via email on completion. cover yourself get the paperwork.

flytipping-rubbishremoval-houseclearance-clearanceandcleanupA few weeks ago, a story hit Sheffield that upset many of its residents.  This wasn’t your regular kind of upsetting story because it was actually related to fly tipping after a house clearance in once of Sheffield’s most beautiful areas.  Blacka Moor is a nature reserve and on a small road named Moss Road, on its outskirts, the bulk of a house clearance were discovered dumped.  This happening was discovered by a walker, who was horrified and reported in thereafter to the local council.  They highlighted the problems that dumping general rubbish and off loading post house clearance can cause.  These reasons included the eyesore that it causes and the dangers rubbish can cause to humans, wildlife and livestock who live in the area. Plastic bags for example can cause suffocation, glass can cut, injury and kill, as can any sharp object, most household items are not able to be broken down naturally so ecologically are environmentally extremely unfriendly and financially, why should the council have to pay for someone else’s household items to be removed and disposed of?  People may think that fly tipping will save them money because they won’t have to pay the waste disposal charge, but they obviously do not realise that personal identification can often be obtained from litter which has been dumped and the owner is then tracked down and fined.  This certainly will not save them money!

spring-clean-house-clearance-sheffield-chesterfield-worksopSpring has sprung and it is the perfect time of year for everyone to be spring cleaning their house.  For many people this is the time of year when they decide to tidy up, sort things out, out their house on the market and move on to pastures new.  But this is when people often discover all sort of items which they had completely forgotten all about, lurking in their attic or basement.  Do you know what’s hiding in yours?

Hiding House Clearance Treasures

Interestingly, during house clearances, it has been found that an estimated 40% of us own antiques or vintage items and 16% have unknowingly given these, often high value items away, either to friends, relatives or charity shops.  Strangely, even when a lot of us know that we have these items, it is interesting to know that we don’t tend to bother listing them on our home insurance, as a nation, either.  When asked during this survey, members of the public were unable to estimate the worth of the contents of the house due to the fact that they do not do a regular content checks, cover or valuations.  This can often be because we do not realise that some things are of particular value.  When we say antiques, yes we are referring to large items such as a Victorian sideboard, but there are much smaller, younger items which will surprise you with their value and these are examples of items which are often not taken in to consideration for valuation.  A good example of this is a Meccano, clockwork race car from somewhere around 1915 – this may have been small in size, but when sold, gained almost £500.

Perhaps, therefore it is time this Spring, to see what is hiding out in your attic or cellar.  It could be something you have been missing, a way a making yourself a little extra cash or decluttering your home before a house moveClearance and Cleanup can assist you with decluttering your home, moving house or furniture removal.

world-war-one-house-clearance-sheffieldHe was an electrical installations manager working for Sheffield City Council until he went to fight.  But on 26th September 1915, Sgt Francis Stubbs was killed in action in France, having been serving with the Royal Engineers.  He was 35 years old at the time and sadly, had a daughter on the way, which he never had the fortune of meeting, but she was given a suitcase full of his possessions which she kept for the entirety of her life.  When she died however, her house was subjected to a house clearance, where the suitcase filled with WWI items came in to the possession of David Empson, a historian and collector.  This suitcase was very much seen as a ‘one off’ due to the fact that the collection of contents inside it told an entire story of one life.  Stories gripping, when it was learnt that a comrade of Sgt Stubbs removed all of the items out of his pockets when he lay dying, having been caught in an explosion.  Thanks to the house clearance the smashed pocket watch, blood stained identity tag and pipe all live on to tell their incredible story, despite not being in the hands of Sgt Stubbs’ relatives any longer.

picasso-house-clearance-cleanupOn the 28th July 2016, New Lanark in Scotland, will be hosting the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow.  New Lanark is said to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing and historic settings that has ever been filmed for the Antiques Roadshow.  It is a world heritage site illustrating industrial history, which includes an 18th century mill village and a team of highly knowledgeable experts to educate any visitors, answering any questions they may have, during their time visiting New Lanark.

The House Clearance Jackpot

2015’s Antiques Roadshows filming day, attracted an incredible 35,000 people to attended the day and bring their personal belonging which were of interest and anything they wanted a valuation for.  These included mesmerising items, such as JFKs former jacket, an £80,000 musical penknife and a toy panda which once flew with the ‘Dambusters’ themselves.  But, what was the most spectacular find of the day, was a sketch which was believed to have been undertaken by Picasso.   This, however, was not the reason it was thought of to be so spectacular.  It was, in fact, due to it having bought from a sale post house clearance for just a couple of pounds.

Tom Pickering, the owner of Clearance and Clean Up, is asked certain questions extremely frequently.  So we thought, what better than writing an article in an attempt to answer those questions for you.  We don’t want moving house or house clearances to be as daunting as people often think they are.  They key to everything is to be as organised as is humanly possible!

In a nutshell, if you are disorganised (don’t know where anything is, where anything is going, don’t know what you do or don’t want to keep, haven’t emptied any cupboards, wardrobes etc., haven’t given any clear instructions to the clearance team before they arrive, haven’t asked neighbours for a access permission or cleared a route for the clearance team) then this will lead to clearance team having to be on site for much longer, which in return will, without doubt cost you more money!  So, if you are wanting to be economical, be organised!

Guinness-furness house-clearance

This month, the heirs to the Guinness brand, auctioned off the contents of their Georgian property, Furness House, which was built in 1740.  The auction was held at Killashee House Hotel due to the house currently being for sale.  Patrick and Louise Guinness (Patrick being thedirect descendent) are the seventh generation, post Arthur Guinness, when they bought Furness House in 1994.  21 years later, the couples have decided to downsize their house and get rid of many of its valuable contentsby having a house clearance sale, since the last of their four children left home.  Many of the items being sold are Guinness and Co. memorabilia.  Items like a rare pair of metal-bound stout barrels which were inscribed with the company name made €2,300 and a set of coloured caricature prints entitled The Gentle Art of Making Guinness sold for €1,600.  Though the biggest surprise of the day during the house clearance auction was the success of an Edwardian carved and hand painted rocking horse.  It was estimated to fetch between €800 and €1,200 but sold for a whopping €6,600!

grenade house clearance sheffieldRisbury, a small village not normally known for interruptions, near Leominster, but on Thursday (10th September), this sleepy village was strangely interrupted. A house clearance team were undergoing a house clearance in Risbury when they found a World War II grenade. An area of Risbury was cordoned off when the grenade was cited amidst belongings in the middle of the house clearance and Police were summoned immediately to the address.  A 25 metre radius around the house was taped off henceforth. Bomb disposal experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene extremely promptly and assessed the bomb.   Luckily, for this little village, the bomb assessment found the bomb not to be live and EOD announced that the grenade was empty. This story could have had such a different ending if the bomb had not been so, with dramatic impact for both the house owners and indeed this little village. But it was all thanks to the house clearance team who knew exactly what to do when they spotted this potential danger.
